American Red Cross Lifeguard Training

Weymouth Club is an American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay Authorized Provider. ARC Lifeguard training will teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.
 
Prerequisites
  • Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
    1. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not
    allowed.  2. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. 3. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit.

Materials Needed

An American Red Cross Lifeguard Manual is required. All candidates are responsible for providing their own Participant Products/Materials. The candidate may use these in e-book format with a laptop or tablet (wi-fi available) or print the materials out themselves. The balance must be paid on or before the start of the course. If the enrolled student does not take the course for any reason or pass the prerequisite testing, they will be given either a 6-month grace period to take another course or be refunded the balance less a $100 deposit. If the enrolled student does not pass the course upon completion of all sessions they will be given a 6-month grace period to take another course, but no money will be refunded.

Lifeguard Recertification

Prerequisites
  • Only individuals with a CURRENT Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED or Shallow Water Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate may participate in a review course.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

The purpose of the Water Safety Instructor course is to train candidates to teach water safety, including the basic water rescue course, six levels of the Learn to Swim, and Parent/Child Aquatics.

Prerequisites 

  • Candidates must be 16 years of age on or before the completion of the class 
  • Successfully demonstrate swimming the following strokes: Front Crawl (25 yards), Backstroke (25 yards), Breaststroke (25 yards), Sidestroke (25 yards), Butterfly (demonstrate)

Materials Needed:

An American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Manual is required. All candidates are responsible for providing their own Participant Products/Materials. Waterfront
The purpose of the Waterfront Class is to train candidates to lifeguard in an open body of water.  The certification is required at all beachfront lifeguarding facilities.

CPR/AED/FIRST AID for the Professional Rescuer Challenge
Weymouth Club is an ARC of Mass Bay Authorized Provider. CPR/AED/First Aid Certifications are valid for 2 years.
